Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a small loaf pan (approximately 7x3 inches).
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.
In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
Fold in the chopped dried plums, raisins, candied orange peel, and cashews (if using).
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
